Steroid Effects on Sperm Count

Usages of steroids have become a fairly common phenomenon these days especially among the younger age group of men. Things can get scary when reports suggest that using anabolic steroids, the steroids effects on the fertility system of the men is to such an extent that many could get sterile. Men who have used steroids for a very long span of time such as body builders are more prone to these effects than others.

Anabolic steroids can make a person very addicted to them in a short span of time. There are two ways of using steroids.

>> Stacking

>> Cycling

In the first case, a person uses a large number of anabolic steroids which are analogous to testosterone in their effect on the body. This increases the amount of testosterone in the blood stream. High level of testosterone leads to excessive muscle augmentation. Due to increased levels of the male hormone, the testicles of a man get a signal from the brain to stop production of testosterone. As a result, the low level of testosterone in the blood can be taken as steroids effects. Even the spermatogonia which are the primary sperm producing entity also stop functioning temporarily. The problem starts when there is a profound dose of steroids stacking and the testicles never resume production of testosterone and as a result, there is no making of sperm.

In the phenomenon of cycling, men tend to take extremely high doses of steroids for a particular extent of time. Then they completely stop taking the product. After a while, they repeat the cycle of doses. Normally, the consumption of steroids goes on for about 6 to 12 weeks before a cool off period. This is more dangerous than stacking and has grievous steroids effects. This is primarily because in this case, the doses of steroids are ten to twelve times more potent than a basic dose of testosterone. Enduring such a heavy dose for a period of 6-12 weeks can damage the body in many ways than one can even think off.

Losing one's fertility is not a matter of joke and later on, one can do nothing but be repentant. What we can suggest here is that men should take care of their body. They should not use steroids or any other medicines without consulting a qualified doctor. Being aware of the steroids effects is important as one definitely does not want any life altering disease to set in.

Testosterone and sperm production

Testosterone the principle male sex hormone is needed for normal production of sperm cells.  Testosterone is secreted in testicles. A small amount of this hormone is also secreted by adrenal glands.

The developing sperm cells are supported by Sertoli cells. Sertoli cells are situated within seminiferous tubules of testes. These cells provide nourishment to developing sperms and support them.

The process of spermatogenesis (the process of production of sperms) is extremely sensitive to fluctuations in surrounding environment. The process very quickly varies to fluctuation of hormone concentration and temperature. High concentration of testosterone is required in surrounding area where sperms develop. The supportive sertoli cells maintain the environment needed for development of sperms. These cells produce a binding protein which concentrates testosterone in the surrounding environment where spermatogenesis takes place.

Low levels of testosterone slow down the process of spermatogenesis or sperm production. Hence all measures have to be taken to maintain the normal level of testosterone to increase sperm count and sperm motility.

The Benefits of a Sperm Count Test

So, they are like "soldiers" that protect the territory of our body from invaders. However, some men have an abnormal antibodies. Instead of guarding the territory, these 'soldiers" are attacking their own friends, including sperm. These antibodies blocking the sperm on the way to the egg, preventing fertilization. Vajikarana Therapy in Ayurveda

In Ayurveda the treatment that is adopted to increase libido is called "VAJIKARANA". As this therapy increases the strength of a man to perform sexual act, like a horse, it is called 'Vajikarana'. ( 'Vaaji'=Horse.)

Vaajikaranamanvicchet purusho nityamatmawan|
Thadaayattou hi dharmarthou preetishcha yasha yevacha ||
Putrasyaayatanam hyetad gunashchaite sutashrayaha |

This means "The person who takes virility therapy or Vajikarana therapy after rejuvenation therapy gets offspring. Through these offspring he gains the happiness."

The main aim of Vajikarana therapy is to increase the sexual energy of men and help to solve male infertility. Through this therapy men can gain good erection, sperm count and sperm motility. Vajikarana therapy also helps to boost libido.

Who should not consume Vajikarana Preparations?

Ayurveda acharyas have framed few rules for consumption of Vajikarana preparations. These preparations have to be consumed by “jitendriya purusha” or man who has complete control on his senses and desires. If Vajikarana preparations are consumed by “ajitendriya purusha” or man who has lost control over his senses and desire, he may prove harmful to society.

Sexual acts should not be performed by young boys (below 20 years) or aged men (above 70 years). In younger boys formation of dhatus (tissues) will not be complete. If sexual act is performed at this stage they will land into a condition called dhatukshaya in which the nourishment of tissues reduces and they feel weak and fragile. During formative years whole body energy should be channelized for development of body tissues. Especially in boys, the male reproductive system has to develop completely to produce good quality and quantity of semen. If body energy and nourishment is used up in sexual act during initial stages of development, then the development of male reproductive system may become sluggish. This might lead to low sperm count, low motility and infertility (the inability to produce offspring).

In aged persons there will be dahtu kshaya (deterioration of tissues) due to old age. If men above 70 years indulge in sexual act it may further deteriorate dhatus and can hasten ageing. According to ayurveda acharyas “if an aged man performs sexual act his body will be deprived of energy and vitality. He will be lifeless like a dry stick which is infested by insects.” Hence Vajikarana preparations should not be consumed by aged men as these preparations may kindle their sexual desire or libido.

Who has to consume Vajikarana Preparations?

Men above 20 years of age and below 70 years have to consume Vajikarana preparations. Their intensions should be good and their aim must be to produce healthy offspring.

Benefits of Vajikarana Therapy:

•Vajikarana therapy increases hard erections and helps in erectile dysfunction.
•It increases duration of hard erection and prevent premature ejaculation.
•The therapy rejuvenates male reproductive system and helps to increase sperm count and sperm motility.
•It increases body energy level and retards ageing process.
•Men who undergo this therapy look attractive and never get tiered.
•The herbs in Vajikarana therapy nourish male reproductive system.

Diabetes and low sperm count

Recent researches have shown that men with diabetes have low sperm count. Uncontrolled blood sugar level and fluctuating blood sugar levels lead to low sperm count.

According to principles of ayurveda - Rasa (lymph), medas (body fat), rakta (blood), shukra ambu (body fluid) get vitiated by tridoshas (vata ,pitta ,kapha) to cause prameha or diabetes. In this condition the seven dhatus which nourish our body reduce in quality due to affliction of tridoshas. The seventh dhatu “Shukra dhatu” or semen gets affected in this process. As a result sperm count and sperm motility reduce.

The shukra dhatu or semen gets its nourishment through rasa dhatu. In diabetes rasa dhatu gets vitiated through doshas. Due to this the nourishment to shukra dhatu decreases. This affects the beejaanu or sperms

A new article has been published at http://www.firstmed.co.uk/article.php?article=04-May-2007-95 which goes as follows

Diabetes sufferers have lower sperm count

"Men with diabetes stand a lower chance of conceiving a baby, a new study has fou"

Men with diabetes stand a lower chance of conceiving a baby, a new study has found.

Published in the Human Reproduction journal, the research shows that semen volume is lower in diabetic men compared with non-diabetic men and that the nuclear DNA in diabetic men's sperm cells is more fragmented.

Furthermore, there were more mitochondrial deletions – meaning a loss in the 'power stations' inside cells that fuel cell activity – in those with the disease.

Dr Ishola Agbaje of Belfast University who carried out the research, said: "Our study identifies important evidence of increased DNA fragmentation of nuclear DNA and mitochondrial DNA deletions in sperm from diabetic men.

"These findings cause concern, as they may have implications for fertility," he added.

"If the increasing trend in the incidence of type I diabetes continues, this will result in a 50 per cent increase over the next ten years.

"As a consequence, diabetes will affect many more men prior to and during their reproductive years.

"Infertility is already a major health problem in both the developed and developing world, with up to one in six couples requiring specialist investigation or treatment in order to conceive."
