Weight Loss Tips For Men Over 50 – 3 Fantastic Tips For Permanent and Fast Weight Loss

Weight loss tips for men over 50 need to be carefully considered because there are special considerations for men of this (or any other) age. In this article, I’ll share with you three of my own personal tips that helped me to lose 50 pounds of weight myself. They should be able to help you too.

Tip 1 – Only Moderate Exercise

Men at your age should not suddenly start to do vigorous exercise. In fact, anyone who is overweight is not supposed to, according to what doctors say.

Not to worry though, because exercise is not the key to losing weight. But it can help accelerate your weight losses and make you feel better and keep away your hunger pangs so it is no bad thing.

I suggest nothing more vigorous than walking or riding a bike.

Tip 2 – Count Your Calories

Some people say that you should not count your calories. I disagree! It really helped me to count calories when I first started to lose weight.

Know what your maximum is. At your age, you probably need around 2,200 to 2,400 calories per day.

To lose a pound of weight per week, you should have a daily calorific deficit of around 500 calories so this means eating no more than 1,700 to 1,900 calories per day.

This is a rule that you must adhere to. At least, if you cheat then you know you are cheating. This rule cannot be easily bent so this is a good thing!

Tip 3 – Take It Easy And Slow

The more of a shock a weight loss effort is to you then the less likely you will be to succeed. If all the above sounds daunting to you, then just take it one step at a time.

e.g. forget the exercise to start with and just start by cutting 200 daily calories from your diet.

3 Commonly Overlooked Dangers Of Crash Dieting

Millions of people resort to crash dieting every year with the same staggering effects: They feel worse after the crash dieting than before! Crash dieting can be dangerous for your overall health and fitness. Let's take a look at some of the dangers of crash dieting and you tell me if you've done some of these things before, ok?

Danger #1 - Trying to lose a lot of weight really fast.

You simply can't do this. The human body was not made to operate like this. When you try to lose weight fast, you run the risk of not only losing weight, but you may also be losing muscle. Losing muscle will affect your ability to lose fat and then you end up making your body basically work against itself to lose weight.

Danger #2 - Crash dieting screws up your metabolism.

When you try to lose weight fast, your body will react by slowing down your metabolism to reserve your energy that the body has stored in fat. When you skip meals or drastically reduce the amount of calories that you normally eat, your body will look to its fat stores as a way to supplement the calories that it's not receiving. This means that your metabolism will slow down a lot and if your metabolism is slow, then that means that you're not naturally burning fat quickly or efficiently.

Danger #3 - Crash dieting is not a long term solution.

Most people that crash diet rebound with a stronger appetite than they had previously simply because their body still wants the higher amount of calories that it was used to before the diet. This leads to quick weight gain because by this point your metabolism is so slow that it can't burn the calories as fast as before. You end up gaining the weight that you lost right back in record time, feeling miserable along the way.

The easiest and simplest way to avoid all of these dangers is to lose weight slowly. Your body was not made to lose 5 or 10 pounds a week. It was made to lose 1 to 2.5 pounds a week at most. Even better, simply try to focus on losing no more than 1% of your body weight each week. This is the healthiest approach that you can take to losing weight and you'll feel better and healthier every step of the way.

A little weight loss may help obese men improve sexual health

Obese men who want to improve their sexual health might have another solution besides their erectile dysfunction drugs. A study finds that overweight men who lost just 5% of their weight over eight weeks saw improvements in erectile dysfunction, sexual desire and urinary tract symptoms.

The small study focused on 31 obese men with a body mass index of 30 or greater and who had Type 2 diabetes. Some were put on a low-calorie diet that included liquid meal replacements and others were assigned to a high-protein, low-fat diet that decreased their calorie intake by 600 calories a day. For 42 weeks afterward the participants stayed on the high-protein diet, or were switched to it.

Those on the low-calorie diet lost 10% of their body weight and 10% off their waist circumference, and those on the high-protein diet lost 5% of their weight and waist circumference. But participants in both groups improved their plasma glucose, LDL ("bad") cholesterol, erectile function, urinary symptoms, sexual desire and endothelial function. Endothelial cells form a thin layer and line the inside surface of blood vessels. Dysfunctional cells can be a marker for vascular disease and may signal early development of athersclerosis.

Weight loss and improvement of insulin sensitivity, the authors wrote, could increase the production of testicular testosterone, and in turn, enhance sexual function.

"Our findings are consistent with the evidence that not only erectile function, but also lower urinary tract symptoms are a marker of cardio-metabolic risk," said Dr. Gary Wittert of the University of Adelaide in Australia, in a news release. "The evidence that improvement can be achieved by modest weight loss, in particular when a diet is of high nutritional quality, is of public health significance in framing public health messages that resonate with men."

Can Exercise Fight Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) has been reported by 12% of men under 59, 22% of men aged 60 to 69, and 30% of men 70 and over. Being overweight makes it even more likely. Men with a body mass index (BMI) over 28.7 have a 30% higher risk of having ED than those with a normal BMI (i.e. 25 or below).

Physicians in Naples, Italy, have studied whether weight loss and increased physical activity can improve ED in obese men. Their findings are reported in the Journal of the American Medical Association, and are summarized here.

What was done

Obese men with erectile dysfunction, aged 35 to 45 years, were recruited. They had to have a body mass index of 30 or above, and a score of 21 or less on the International Index of Erectile Function (IIEF). (This score was the result of answers to 5 questions; each allocated up to 5 points, so the maximum score possible was 25.) Men with diabetes, high blood pressure, or raised cholesterol levels were excluded from the study.

Of 140 obese men assessed initially, 30 were eliminated - for health reasons or because they were unwilling to undertake the suggested lifestyle changes. The remaining men were allocated at random to join either the so-called 'intervention' group, or the 'control' group.

Men in the intervention group received detailed advice on how to reduce their body weight by 10% or more - individually tailored dietary recommendations, and guidance on increasing physical activity. The trial lasted 2 years, during which the men had regular sessions with the nutritionist and the exercise trainer - monthly in the first year and bi-monthly in the second.

Obese men in the control group were given general information about healthy eating and exercise at baseline, and then again every two months, but they received no further counseling.

Tests conducted at baseline and after 2 years included height, weight, waist size, and blood pressure measurements; total cholesterol, HDL, and triglyceride levels; blood inflammatory markers (C-reactive protein or CRP, interleukins 6 and 8); and the function of the cells lining the blood vessels (endothelium) after L-arginine stimulus. And, of course, the IIEF was repeated after 2 years, as the measure of success or failure in improving erectile dysfunction.

What was found

At baseline the results of the IIEF and the tests outlined above were similar in both groups of obese men. Their average BMI was 36.5, and the average IIEF score was 13.7.

It can be seen that the lifestyle intervention was effective in reducing the BMI levels and improving the IIEF scores in the men who received it. After 2 years, 17 out of 55 obese men in the intervention group, compared with 3 out of 55 controls, reported IIEF scores above 22 i.e. their symptoms of erectile dysfunction had nearly disappeared.

Along with the improved symptoms, there were reductions in some of the inflammation markers in the blood, and improvements in the blood lipid profiles, indicating a reduced risk for cardiovascular disease. No such changes were seen in the control group men.

What this means

In an earlier US study, men who began to exercise in midlife had a 70% lower likelihood of developing erectile dysfunction, compared with those who remained sedentary. In the study we've summarized here, weight loss achieved by changes in lifestyle (diet, exercise) clearly improved existing erectile dysfunction in obese men. The take-home message is clear-cut. Start exercising in midlife to avoid erectile dysfunction, and if you are overweight and have developed this problem, diet and exercise will help you get back to normal functioning. You should certainly try this approach before turning to Viagra and its near relations.
